Ferguson, who was on duty, acted as he pleased and Howard allegedly drove about a third of a mile from the victim’s home, where he was killed by his personal handgun, police said.

Howard was last seen at his home around 5 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The next day, his girlfriend monitored his phone and was told he was missing, but could not find him. Ferguson was arrested and immediately fired Sunday, police said. Police said the former police officer was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, particularly aggravated kidnapping, abusing a corpse and fabricating evidence and fraud.

Ferguson has been working for the MPD since October 2018, police said. A second person, Joshua Rogers, 28, was arrested for assisting Ferguson in transporting the victim’s body, police said. After the truth on Rogers, the deputy abused a corpse and plotted and damaged evidence. It was not immediately clear Monday whether Ferguson and Rogers will have lawyers.

According to the Shelby County Jail, Ferguson was not placed on any bond when Rogers was released on $ 25,000 bond. Ferguson and Rogers were interrogated Monday morning, according to prison records. The Shelby County Public Guard Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday. No one is above the law, MPD director Michael Rawlings said in a statement. A Memphis police officer, someone who has vowed to protect and serve, knows that the decision to commit this heinous crime will be catastrophic.
