Guide to the Different Types and Sizes of Excavators

When you are looking for excavator attachments, Denver-based or elsewhere, you want to understand what you are looking for. Excavator attachments are simpler to understand than you might think. When you consider that excavators have been in use since the 1800’s, you can simplify your search for the product that will meet the same needs today that it did yesterday.

History of Excavators

Excavators have been around since the 1800s, but it was 1796 when the idea of them first evolved. In 1796, a man by the name of William Otis worked on what was known as a steam shovel. He needed something with the power to do some digging.

He designed a system that included chains, gears, and cables, to dig the ground. The system would be patented by 1839. The William Otis steam shovel, or steam-powered excavator would be a foundation of railway construction through the 1800s. Then, excavator attachments consisted of just that, cables, pulleys, chains, and a digger.

The work of Otis would result in necessity becoming the mother of invention when it came to excavators. By 1882, a man by the name of Sir Armstrong would launch the first hydraulic-powered excavator. This one used steam as well, but would be the first steam-powered excavator without cables and chains.

Uses for Excavators

Excavators aren’t used for much different purposes today than they were yesterday. There are several sizes available for purchase or rent for any project. They are among the most commonly used piece of construction equipment today, and excavator attachments are not as hard to find as you might think.

Excavators are used for:

  • Construction and utility projects, such as those for building electric or hydro lines
  • Demolition projects
  • Aggregation projects
  • Recycling and waste projects

Excavator Components

Excavator components and attachments of today are not that difficult to find when you have a good dealer to work with. There are a number of different kinds of excavators, with seven main kinds of excavators. The main components of excavators are their drive systems or the undercarriage, the house, and the arm.

The house of the machine has the hydraulic parts to it, the control grouping, and the engine. The arm of the machine is considered the “business” end of the machine. Every part and component is necessary for the machine to work and perform its function, just as it was in 1796.
