Farida Akhtar, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor clarified that the decision to export Hilsa to India falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Commerce, not the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
During a press briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday, Akhtar emphasized that her ministry remains committed to opposing Hilsa exports and ensuring sufficient supply for domestic consumption.
She explained that the Ministry of Commerce had granted permission for Hilsa exports to India due to various reasons, but reiterated that this decision was not made by the Fisheries Ministry. “We are in favor of feeding Hilsa to the people of our country, not exporting it,” Akhtar stated, distancing her ministry from the decision.
Akhtar also addressed concerns about Hilsa prices rising due to the exports, reassuring that there are ample stocks of Hilsa in the country and that any unjust price hikes would be dealt with accordingly. She mentioned that last year, India imported a smaller quantity of Hilsa and noted that the export decision was made by the government’s trade authorities.

She further added that Hilsa has no religious connection with Durga Puja, countering any notion that the export was linked to the Hindu festival. Finally, Akhtar announced that from October 13 to November 3, Hilsa fishing and marketing would be prohibited to ensure sustainable management of fish stocks.
