Covid cases inside jail have created panic
The jail superintendent and a jailer of the women’s section at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur have been diagnosed with Covid- 19.
The infected officials are Jail Superintendent Halima Khatun and Jailer of ward No 1 Ritesh Chakma.
Acting senior jail superintendent in-charge Gias Uddin and acting jailer of the women’s section Syed Shah Sharif confirmed this to Bangla Tribune on Friday. Both the officials were currently in isolation at their homes.
On July 26, Brigadier (retd) Abdur Rahim, death-row convict in 10-truck arms case, was also infected with Covid-19 and admitted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. He was later transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
According to prison sources, the inmate facing capital punishment was staying in his condemned cell alone.
Following this, panic spread among the jail authorities and prisoners. The officials have been instructed to be vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure the prevention of Covid-19 inside the prison.
Due to the surge of Covid cases, the prison authorities have suspended in-person meetings of the inmates with their relatives. But they can talk to family members on phone.
Ritesh Chakma has been appointed as the new jailer of Kashimpur Central Jail-1 in Gazipur.
Earlier, he served as the jailer of Magura district jail.
The order was issued in a circular signed by Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Brig.-Gen Mominur Rahman Mamun on Sunday, reports Somoy News.
Senior jail super Ratna Roy and jailer Nur Mohammad Mridha were withdrawn from Kashimpur Central Jail-1 on Sunday over allowing a prisoner to spend time alone with a woman inside the prison premises, violating the regulations.
Hallmark Group’s General Manager Tushar Ahmed, brother-in-law of the company’s Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud, reportedly met the woman inside the office a prison official on 6 January.
A private TV channel published a report on Friday using CCTV footage of Tushar and the woman taken from inside the jail on 6 January, and it became the topic of heated discussions among people across the country almost immediately.
Five officials of the jail have been withdrawn in connection with the incident.
Jail Super Abdul Jalil of Kashimpur Central Jail-2 has tested positive for coronavirus.
His wife and father-in-law have also been diagnosed with the deadly virus. They all are currently staying in isolation.
Abdul Jalil himself confirmed the matter.
He said, “He gave sample for test at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College in Gazipur on March 27 as he had symptoms of coronavirus. Later, members of his family also gave sample.”
“On March 28, he (Abdul Jalil) went for isolation to Rajarbag Central Police Lines Hospital in the capital and family members at home,” he added.
Jail Super Abdul Jalil requested all to pray for them.
