Perfume: Should You Buy It Direct From a Manufacturer?

In the year 2000, online sales were $45 billion, or 1.5% of total sales ($3 trillion). The current data suggests that only the first quarter of 2021 took in $215 billion of a $1.581 trillion total (about 13.4%) with little sign of slowing down. Not only have our shopping habits increased, but we also do about ten times the online shopping we did 20 years ago.

Of course, not all sales online are retail. An increasing trend among Millennials especially is to buy direct from a manufacturer.

Can you buy perfume direct from manufacturers? Is it smart to buy directly from manufacturers? Keep reading to find out how to get involved.

How You Can Buy Direct From a Manufacturer

The truth is that even for the best women’s perfumes you can buy your favorite fragrance direct from nearly any brand’s website. You don’t even need to buy wholesale perfume quantities to get the savings you’re likely looking for. These are brands like:

  • Calvin Klein
  • Chanel
  • Nautica
  • Versace
  • Montblanc
  • Guess
  • Dolce & Gabbana
  • Vera Wang

But is that the same as buying from the manufacturer or supplier? The supplier of Calvin Klein and many other brands is actually different. For example, Calvin Klein’s perfume supplier is Firmenich for “cK one.”

They also supply Valentino, D&G, Gucci, and others. There are layers upon layers of holding companies, parent companies, and factory sites for the chemicals that go into making a single perfume.

As you’ll find, buying direct from perfume manufacturers will likely be impossible. This is because they’re asked by the brands to produce the product under license.

Becoming a Distributor

If you’re thinking about being a distributor for perfume brands, though, it could be an option for you. There’s a bit involved, though, and you’ll have to manage your risk.

  1. Make a business plan to pitch
  2. Get financing, capital, and credit
  3. Get the ability to accept credit and debit cards
  4. Get a retail sales or vendor license and obtain a TIN from the IRS
  5. Find an efficient way to distribute to customers
  6. Develop contacts in the perfume distribution chain
  7. Advertise to retail shops
  8. Make your sales

It’s likely not the type of thing you’re looking for if all you want to do is save a few dollars.

The Skinny on Buying Direct From a Manufacturer

Buying the top women’s perfume for your signature scent from a manufacturer likely isn’t going to work out as you imagined. Fortunately, there are those who are still middle-men with much lower prices than brick-and-mortar retail shops and good reputations.

To get the best deals you may have to buy wholesale or wait for coupons and other offers, but you can still buy individual stock at reduced prices.
