Internet users in Bangladesh may face slower speeds or complete outages for four hours due to maintenance work on the country’s second submarine cable system. The Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCCL) announced on Friday, September 27, that internet services linked to the Kuakata station could be affected during this period.
The maintenance is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 28, starting from 2 AM and continuing until 6 AM on Sunday, September 29. During this time, the SEA-ME-WE 5 (SMW5) submarine cable, which connects to the Kuakata landing station, will be undergoing essential maintenance.
According to a notice signed by BSCCL General Manager (Operations and Maintenance), Saidur Rahman, the work involves installing a new lighting filter on the cable system.
While the SMW5 cable will be offline, circuits connected to the SEA-ME-WE 4 (SMW4) cable through the Cox’s Bazar landing station will continue to function normally. Despite this backup, internet users may still experience slower speeds or interruptions.
BSCCL apologized for any inconvenience caused and assured users that maintenance is crucial for ensuring the long-term stability and efficiency of the country’s submarine cable systems.
