Syed Jamil Ahmed, Theatre Icon, Becomes Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy

Prominent director and educator Dr. Syed Jamil Ahmed has been appointed as the Director General of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

On Monday, September 9th, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification confirming his appointment. Dr. Syed Jamil Ahmed was born on April 7, 1955, in Dhaka. He is the founder of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University, where he has been teaching for over 30 years.

In 1978, Syed Jamil Ahmed graduated from India’s National School of Drama, securing the top position in his class. That same year, he also topped the Television Producers’ Training at the Film and Television Institute of India. His academic excellence continued, and in 1989, he earned a Master’s degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Warwick in England. In 1997, he completed his PhD from Dhaka University.

Some of his notable publications include Achin Pakhi Infinity, Indigenous Theatre in Bangladesh, In Praise of Niranjan, Islam Theatre, And Bangladesh, Reading Against the Orientalist Grain, Performance and Politics Entwined with a Buddhist Strain, Applied Theatrics, and Essays in Refusal.

Syed Jamil Ahmed is not only a scholar and theatre director but also the founding chairman of the Department of Theatre and Music at Dhaka University. His significant theatre productions include Komola Rani’s Sagar Dighi (1997), Ek Hazar Ar Ek Thi Rat (1998), Behula’s Vashan (2004), Pahiye (2006), and Song Bhong Chong (2006).
