Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Bangladeshi Hindus celebrating Janmashtami today

Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Today, Monday, marks the auspicious occasion of Shubho Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Sri Krishna, a revered figure in the Sanatan Hindu community. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of the waning moon in the month of Bhadra. This day is celebrated with great religious fervor and joyous festivities by the Hindu community throughout the country.

Sanatan believers hold that Lord Krishna incarnated on Earth to restore justice and righteousness during times when evil forces sought to overpower truth and goodness. This belief is rooted in the idea that God manifests in human form to defeat evil and establish dharma, truth, and beauty in the world.

In observance of Shubho Janmashtami, the Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee has organized a series of central programs at the Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka. The day’s events include a Geeta Yagna at 8 AM, praying for the well-being of the nation, followed by the historic Janmashtami procession at 2 PM, and Sri Krishna Puja in the evening.

The procession will be preceded by a discussion session, with Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, Advisor to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Cultural Affairs, as the chief guest. The march will be inaugurated by Md. Nahid Islam, Advisor to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Additionally, on August 30, a discussion meeting will be held at the Dhakeshwari National Temple at 2 PM, with Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, as the chief guest. Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Labor and Employment, will inaugurate the event.

The meeting will be presided over by Jayanta Kumar Dev, President of the Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee. The committee has decided to reduce the formalities of the Janmashtami celebrations, with the saved funds being donated to flood relief efforts.

ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) has also planned a series of events starting today and continuing until August 27. These events include readings from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, bhajan and kirtan sessions, offerings of bhog, distribution of mahaprasad, discussions, cultural programs, and religious plays.

In honor of Janmashtami, today is a public holiday in Bangladesh. Special programs will be broadcast on Bangladesh Betar, television, and private satellite channels to commemorate the occasion.
