Messenger End-to-End Encryption Rolled Out

Meta has officially rolled out the End-to-End Encryption on Messenger and Facebook globally. Users are getting the PIN Setup pop-up message on both the Messenger App and the Web. The Messenger PIN will required to access the chat history including chats and calls on another device once a user sets it on their account.

The company has finally enabled the messenger end-to-end encryption. A vast number of Facebook users are getting the pop-up message on the app. Provably, the security layer is fully rolled out globally. Earlier, the message was showing around 4 months ago within certain countries. The maximum number of users are asked to set up a new way to access the chat history.

Meanwhile, some of the users assumed that this could be a bug or server related issue. Because Facebook was down on March 6 for 50 minutes. Users experienced the Messenger log-out issue along with Instagram down. After 15 days, Facebook down was seen on March 21, 2024. On the day, the active status on Messenger was missing, no cover photo on the page, and the a blank page on the Facebook search result.

The Messenger PIN feature is legit, this is not a bug or unexpected. It’s part of the new features like WhatsApp, Meta rolled out end-to-end encryption on Messenger and Facebook. Using the PIN will allow you to access your chat history if you log in on a new phone or computer.

“Yesterday when I opened the Facebook App on my phone, I got a pop-up telling me to create a PIN on Messenger. It is asking me to choose whether I want to set it or Access it only on this device. What is the issue? This is a bug in the App?” a user wrote on Facebook post.

Another wrote “The Messenger forced me to create a PIN to continue using the app on my phone. I don’t know how to remove it. There will be any issues in the future if I do not set it up?

A user wrote on Twitter that, “The Messenger PIN feature is a new security. There is no need to worry. We just need to set up the pin and remember it. The company has rolled out the end-to-end encryption on Messenger and Facebook. This will allow us to access the chat history on a new phone or PC using the Messenger PIN”.

Earlier, Loredana Crisan, Head of Messenger announced the Launching of the Default End-to-End Encryption on Messenger on December 6, 2023. “We are going to roll out a new security layer, the default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls on Messenger and Facebook,” he added.

As per Timothy Buck, the Messenger will be upgraded to stronger encryption standards as part of our ongoing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) testing. The Product Manager of Messenger said that last year on August 22 through a press release.
