Minister consults boards on unified SSC, HSC exams

Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon is set to seek opinions from education board chairmen on holding SSC and HSC exams with identical questions. The discussion comes as the government considers changes to the national examination system.

A Ministry of Education source said on Wednesday that the minister will review both the benefits and challenges of such a system. Talks with key stakeholders are also expected before any final decision is made.

An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that no decision has been taken so far. The proposal is still at an early stage. Further steps will depend on the minister’s direction after consultations.

Earlier, the minister raised the idea during an iftar event with journalists covering the education sector. He said there should be a common standard for all students across the country. He added that many international competitive exams use identical questions, suggesting Bangladesh could adopt a similar approach.

The proposal, if approved, would apply to all general education boards. Officials say the aim is to ensure fairness and consistency in student assessment.

For Bangladeshi students, such a change could bring a more uniform evaluation system. However, experts note that careful planning will be needed to address regional differences and exam management.
